Old Man’s Beard

Clematis vitalba (Traveller’s-joy, Old Man’s Beard)

This scrambling hedgerow perennial loves chalky soils and is found in the hedgerows forming the perimeter round Bepton Down.

Between July and August it produces clusters of fragrant creamy white flowers on woody stems which grow to between 20 – 30m in length. The fruits are known as achenes and have long silky plumes which give this plant one of its common names.
